I’m Carole Appleton—an author, advocate, and speaker dedicated to helping families understand and prevent elder financial abuse. My first book grew out of the moment I discovered that my grandmother had been a victim of elder financial abuse. Confronting what happened to her opened my eyes to how easily this can happen and how often families miss the warning signs.
What Drives My Work
My mission is to help people recognize those signs, ask the difficult questions, and have the conversations that protect their loved ones’ future care and financial security. No one should be taken advantage of in their final years, and no family should have to face this situation alone.
About My Journey
I never planned to become an author or an advocate. My career was in professional hockey and nonprofit work, and like many people, I assumed financial scams happened to “other families”—until it happened to mine.
When my family faced elder financial fraud, I saw how advanced these schemes are and how unprepared most people are to protect themselves. That experience changed the direction of my life. Today, I focus on sharing practical guidance, real examples, and support for families dealing with elder financial abuse. No one should have to navigate this alone.
